Key Stage 1EnglishPhonics

Phase 2 Phonics Worksheets — Reception

Phase 2 is the foundation of the Letters and Sounds phonics programme, introducing children to their first set of grapheme–phoneme correspondences. Children learn 19 graphemes and begin blending them to read CVC words (consonant–vowel–consonant) such as "sat", "pin", and "top". Our Phase 2 phonics worksheets reinforce classroom teaching with carefully sequenced practice activities.

What Phase 2 Phonics Covers

Phase 2 is typically taught during the Autumn term of Reception. Children learn the following graphemes in four sets: Set 1 (s, a, t, p), Set 2 (i, n, m, d), Set 3 (g, o, c, k), Set 4 (ck, e, u, r), Set 5 (h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss). They also learn to read and spell high-frequency tricky words including "the", "to", "I", "no", "go", and "into". By the end of Phase 2, children should be able to blend three-phoneme words and write simple sentences.

Activities in Our Phase 2 Worksheets

Our Phase 2 phonics worksheets include letter formation practice for each grapheme, sound-matching activities (match the picture to its initial sound), blending practice (sound out and read CVC words), segmenting tasks (write the sounds you hear), and tricky word recognition. Each worksheet targets a specific Phase 2 set so teachers and parents can match worksheets to exactly what has been taught in school.

How to Use These Worksheets at Home

Phonics practice is most effective when it is short, daily, and multi-sensory. Use our worksheets alongside oral blending practice: say the sounds aloud ("c–a–t"), push them together, and read the word. For letter formation, ensure your child uses the correct starting point and direction — our worksheets show formation arrows for every grapheme. Practice tricky words as flashcards in addition to the written activities on the worksheets.
