Phase 3 Digraphs Phonics Worksheets — Year 1

Phase 3 extends the phonics knowledge from Phase 2 by introducing digraphs (two letters making one sound) and trigraphs (three letters making one sound). With 25 new graphemes to learn across seven sets, Phase 3 is a significant step in children's phonic development. Our Phase 3 digraphs worksheets provide systematic practice that reinforces classroom teaching and builds the fluency children need for confident reading and writing.

Phase 3 Graphemes: What Children Learn

Phase 3 introduces: Set 6 (j, v, w, x), Set 7 (y, z, zz, qu), consonant digraphs (ch, sh, th, ng), long vowel digraphs (ai, ee, igh, oa, oo), and vowel digraphs and trigraphs (ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er). Children also expand their tricky word bank (she, he, we, me, be, was, my, you, they, her, all, are). Our worksheets are organised by set so teachers can select the exact graphemes being taught.

Activities in Phase 3 Worksheets

Each Phase 3 worksheet includes: grapheme flashcard practice (say the sound, write the grapheme), word sorting activities (sort by digraph: chain, ship, think, ring), cloze exercises (fill the gap with the correct digraph: b_t, br_n, n_se), and sentence-level reading and writing activities. Pictures alongside words support children who are still building their reading vocabulary.
