Long Multiplication Worksheets — KS2

Long multiplication is introduced in Year 5 as a formal written method for multiplying large numbers. The National Curriculum requires children to multiply up to 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers using the formal method by the end of Year 6. Our long multiplication worksheets build this skill methodically, with clear column-by-column layouts that help children avoid the most common errors.

The Formal Long Multiplication Method

Long multiplication involves multiplying the top number by each digit of the bottom number separately, then adding the partial products. For example, 347 × 24: first multiply 347 × 4 = 1388, then multiply 347 × 20 = 6940 (writing a 0 in the units column), then add 1388 + 6940 = 8328. Our worksheets provide pre-drawn columns and clear place-value guidance so children keep digits in the correct columns.

Common Long Multiplication Mistakes

The most common errors are: forgetting to write the 0 placeholder when multiplying by the tens digit, carrying errors (writing the carry digit in the wrong column), and addition errors in the final step. Our worksheets include answer keys with fully worked solutions at each step, so children and parents can identify exactly where an error occurred rather than just knowing the final answer is wrong.
